Denial
I was hanging out with some friends a long while ago when one of them said something like “I read somewhere that if you deny or forget painful memories you live a happier life.” I’ve heard of research into drugs that can dull the bad memories you have associated with rape, death or some other kind of trauma. And I’ve seen selective amnesia dramatized in Paycheck. So I wonder who I would be without my bad memories, and what bad memories would I erase?
What if you could entirely forget a learned (bad) behaviour or habit? Would you be able to go down a new road and not end up being a smoker or over-eater or anorexic? Or is that part of your personality and is something that you can’t unlearn. But maybe it would get you back to zero and you’d have the choice again.
